  1. Vitamin D
  2. Riboflavin
  3. Coenzyme Q10
  4. Folate

These studies may bring some new understanding on some of the imbalances that contribute to migraine attacks, though researchers caution that more information is needed to determine if supplementation with these 4 vitamins can really help.  Because some of the patients in these studies received supplements to address deficiencies, they were often paired with other medications, which makes it impossible to determine how effective the supplements were in providing migraine relief.

Getting to the Root Cause of Migraines

Pills, whether they come in the form of a pharmaceutical drug or a natural vitamin supplement, are used to address symptoms.  In the case of migraines, this means reducing the terrible headache, nausea, and other symptoms of an attack.  How an upper cervical chiropractic approach differs is that we look past the symptoms to get to the root cause of the issue.

Migraines are known as neurological headaches.  Current research points to fundamental neurological abnormalities at play within the central nervous system as a possible cause of migraines.  This aligns perfectly with what upper cervical chiropractors have believed for a long time—that disturbances in nervous system function are the underlying cause of many health conditions.  In the case of migraines, the alignment of the C1 (atlas) vertebra is crucial to evaluate.  The atlas is shaped completely differently from your other vertebrae and forms a protective ring around the brainstem.  When it shifts out of normal alignment due to an accident, injury, or daily repetitive stress and strain, it can obstruct normal brainstem and nervous system function.  Many of our migraine patients at Upper Cervical Health Center of Maine have found lasting relief once their atlas alignment is gently and specifically corrected.
